Woody Allen, though best known for his films, has also enjoyed a very successful career in theater. His first great success was Don't Drink the Water, which opened in 1968, and ran for 598 performances for almost two years on Broadway. Play It Again, Sam opened in 1969, played for 453 performances, and was nominated for three Tony Awards. Mr. Allen's other full-length plays include The Floating Light Bulb (Broadway, 1981) and A Second Hand Memory (Off-Broadway, 2004, dir. by Mr. Allen). His celebrated short plays appear in the collections Without Feathers, Death Defying Acts (with plays by David Mamet and Elaine May), God and Death, Writer's Block (which premiered Off-Broadway in Mr. Allen's stage directing debut), and Relatively Speaking (Broadway, 2011, with plays by Elaine May and Ethan Coen). Currently a musical version of Mr. Allen's film Bullets Over Broadway is in development for the 2013-2014 Broadway season.
